Introducing Vino

Vino is a small wine organizer program I created to manage wines I’ve tasted and what I thought about them.

It’s pretty basic, but has some nice features such as:

It’s freeware, so if you want it grab it. I can’t promise any further development though.

Get Vino

All thoughts on the program are appreciated.

By the way, if you find the program useful, it’d be great if you registered it at iusethis.com – a great Mac software site.

If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to post the source code both for the program and the tiny Ruby script scraping the wine webshop vinmonopolet.no for wine information.

UPDATE: Source code and scraper code has now been posted.

Both the ruby-scrip scraping vinmonopolet.no and the source code is of interest. Will you post it? (or mail it?)

  2. Jørgen 2009/02/04 at 18:43

Hi! Splended app! I second Eirik on publishing the source code. Let us know if you need any help with this (like localizing)

  3. Morten 2009/02/04 at 20:42

Hi! nice app! I miss the possibility to mark which of the wines on the list I have in my "cellar" and the remaining quantity.

Great little app. Cudos to you!

I've also would like to see the source code for this project.
And a little tip, if you want to add a auto update feature, the Sparke framework is super easy and great!

  5. odd 2009/02/04 at 20:58

Possibly to add other items like whisky?

  6. Frode Danielsen 2009/02/04 at 21:22

That Ruby script sounded interesting. It'd be great if you could post it :)

  7. Vidar 2009/02/04 at 23:13

Nice application. Can you pleace mail me the the script regarding the vinmonopolet website ?

Thanks for all feedback so far guys. As you can see I've posted the source and scraper code.

Jørgen: Thanks for the offer. As the source code is now public, you could probably with little effort localize the program yourself. I'd love to hear about it if you did.

Morten: Extended wine cellar tracking is something I've thought about adding and might in a possible later version. Both quantity, "should-drink-by" date and similar information could be added here. I just thought I'd keep the app simple for now.

Alex: I've heard a little bit about Sparkle, will definitely check it out but like I mentioned earlier I can't promise any major updates any time soon due to more pressing assignments. Thanks for the tip!

Franz: :) Great article, I had to use Google to translate it into English so might have missed a couple of the points but loved the title graphic. Thanks!

    Kult! dette skal prøves :)

Fully aware of that the application name primarily refers to wines, I would love to see other drinks implemented as well. I'm not a big fan of wine and I would love to score my scotch a bit more systematically.

This program concept has a great potential!

And a little effort later… It's in Norwegian!
Download the moditied code here: rieckserver.dyndns.org/~jr/VinoKilde.zip
I removed the default.vinodb to loose som kb's.

    Liker programmet veldig godt!

    Men uansett… skambra tiltak!

  17. Morten 2009/02/16 at 16:16

Kanonbra!

  18. Morten 2009/02/16 at 16:18

…….. Beklager. Never mind!
Kjempeprogram!

    • Even 2009/03/04 at 12:49

  19. Lars 2009/03/11 at 10:53

Glimrende program!

Have just found this – so far the best of 3 i have tried. One request for next update – any chance of including Storage Field that is customisable for say 6 individual and selectable storage areas. Secondly – if you set up link for donations i would be happy to oblige – Collin

    • Even 2009/04/29 at 08:07

Hi Collin, Thanks for your feedback. A way to register storage i certainly something I want to implement in the next version. Right now I'm in the middle of delivering my Master's thesis on something completely unrelated from Vino, but when that's done I really want to get some work done on Vino – so some time this summer there should be an update – of course I can't promise but I'm itching to implement some of the suggestions I've gotten so far, including yours :) I'm very pleased that you find Vino useful. I'll put up a link, so if you want to donate feel free :) Best regards, Even

    • Even 2009/04/29 at 08:42

The donate link should be up now :) Thanks again!

  21. Alex 2009/06/01 at 18:02

Vino is GREAT! Could you release a GNU Linux version (i.e. for Ubuntu)? :)

    • Even 2009/06/01 at 18:08

      Hi Alex,

Glad to hear you like Vino. I'm terribly sorry but Vino is written using the OSX native Cocoa frameworks, so as far as I know porting it to Linux would require pretty much a complete rewrite.

  22. Andrew 2009/06/19 at 02:53

How can I get the info OUT of the application? It will not copy/paste or print.
